The Blue Lagoon

The blue lagoon is a man made lake with water rich in silica and sulphur. The water comes from the nearby geothermal power station where superheated steam vents from a nearby lava flow and turns turbines. The water is then used again in a heat exchanger for heating water in a municipal supply. The remaining heat is around 40 degrees Celsius and is used for the lagoon. The water is said to be good for healthy skin and the face pack paste available in pots around the lagoon is meant to take years off you. Like the water, the paste has a strange light blue hue and a number of our students lavishly applied the face packs resulting in a number of them having an ethereal otherworldly look about them until they could scrub it off.
